Canaan Hurricane

Saturday morning we took off in Jonathan's 4Runner for the mountains of the big WV. Hurricane rains pounded Winchester but after clearing the first set of jagged ridges to the west we never felt the rain again. We drove up to the highlands of Dolly Sods and did some exploring off the trail, down a creek that plummeted two thousand feet off the mountain more or less straight down. Not a fun bushwhack. More hiking in the Bog and then out to Canaan Valley to do a little four wheel driving. We went down a rough road that wound sixteen miles along the rim of Blackwater canyon. We made it through with a dented gas tank as our only causality; not the fuel gauge says full all the time... Dinner in Davis and then camping high on the canyon rim in the mists of a windy cloud cover. After the temps dropped and the clouds broke our view of the milky way was crystal, no northern virginian light pollution out here. Sunday we drove down to Franklin and climbed all day along the river. Good times out in the Wild and Wonderful WV.
