Somewhere outside Barstow on the edge of the desert we speed down a ribbon of black pavement. The Sierra Nevada rise like a tsunami of rock lit by the last rays of a dying sun. With Humphrey's Peak in our pocket we camp under a hi-def star filled sky and let the ferocious winds of Tioga Pass cast us into a deep sleep. Yosemite Valley by sunrise and we wander under monolithic granite walls and ancient Sequoia groves. Sometime that afternoon we hit the coast. Carmel by the Sea and Big Sur swirl with Pacific fog and dabs of crisp sun. Days later find trekking in a dry Arizona canyon searching for a place where wounded rock bleeds river pure. Now the plane has landed and its back to life before. Good times, good luck in China Steve.
